Amazon Fresh: New Online Grocery Service Now Serving Seattle

A new, invitation only, service from Amazon called Amazon Fresh hopes to bring back Online grocery ordering and delivery. So far, Amazon Fresh is only available in a few select Seattle neighborhoods and requires an invitation to use the service. To request an invitation access code, click here.
We offer thousands of fresh, frozen, and shelf-stable grocery items—from farm-fresh produce and meat, to milk and eggs, to ice cream—all accessible in a fraction of the time it would take to go to the store and shop.

There are numerous other companies who have tried their hand at Online grocery delivery, but have failed to create a fast, user friendly, convenient way for shoppers to buy and receive orders for grocery items over the Internet. In addition, the processes used to keep perishables from going bad and fresh foods staying fresh has proved to be a challenging aspect for all Online grocers.
NetGrocer is one of the leading Online grocery stores and has been in the business longer than any other grocery company that I am aware of.
Schwans frozen food grocery delivery is very well known, however they have just recently began allowing customers to purchase items Online. THey are not in the market of selling and delivering fresh foods, but rather concentrate on frozen and non-perishable grocery items.
FreshDirect is another popular Online grocer. They are probably the closest thing in existence to what Amazon hopes to accomplish with their fresh grocery delivery model.
Other Online grocery companies include some Safeway stores, Costco/Sams Club, Peapod and Tesco.
For any of these companies to remain successful they will have to partner with other major grocery providers and have a name that everyone knows. Amazon has a great name to brand, and could easily partner with hundreds of other grocers. It will be interesting to see what they do next with Amazon Fresh. I am wondering how they keep ice cream, milk, meat and other perishables from going bad from the time they are ordered, loaded on the truck and delivered to my house. If a company like this can figure out a cheap way to do all those things, they will find themselves with a very lucrative buy Online, home delivery eBusiness for selling grocery items.
